Ai Weiwei was born in 1957 in Beijing. He co-founded the avant-garde artists’ group Stars at the end of the 1970s before moving to New York in 1983. There he was a leading figure in the community of exiled Chinese artists, writers and musicians and became an active member of the American intellectual and artistic scene. In 1993 Ai Weiwei returned to China where he has worked not only as an artist, but also as a curator, architect and blogger. In recent years his activism for social change in China has increased, making him one of the most outspoken critics of the regime.

Curated by Urs Stahel Ai Weiwei – Interlacing is the first major exhibition in Paris of photographs and videos by Ai Weiwei. It foregrounds Ai Weiwei the communicator – the documenting, analyzing, interweaving artist who communicates via many channels. Ai Weiwei already used photography in his New York years, but especially since his return to Beijing, he has incessantly documented the everyday urban and social realities in China, discussing it over blogs and Twitter. Photographs of radical urban transformation, of the search for earthquake victims, and the destruction of his Shanghai studio are presented together with his art photography projects, the Documenta project Fairytale, the countless blog and cell phone photographs. A comprehensive book accompanies this exhibition.

At the same time Magasin 3, Stockholm, presents Ai Weiwei in his first solo exhibition in Sweden. Curated by Tessa Praun, the exhibition focus on a number of Ai Weiwei’s monumental installations and his political work. A reading room which also include documentary films give visitors a chance to learn about his multifaceted efforts to foster social change in China—an activism that puts him on a collision course with the regime.

Ai Weiwei often refers to pre-revolutionary China and its cultural and craft traditions in his work. He seeks out iconic objects with great cultural and symbolic value for the Chinese, and then deliberately treats them with complete disregard for its worth or intended function. The artworks can be seen as commentary on the disdain that Mao’s Cultural Revolution showed the past as well as a way for Ai Weiwei himself to dispatch with conventional notions about art and its value. The works chosen for the exhibition all address Chinese socialism, mass production and global trade.

When doing this series of Landscapes, I have in mind the need of a person to identify with the place they live.

Having lived myself for so long in different places and having had to adapt, I talk about re-location and angst to be part of the landscape“

How do you think about your identity, does it matter to you?

Identity does matter. I am an artist, wife, mother, daughter and teacher and I am the sum of my backgrounds, experiences and knowledge. I read in various languages, choose to listen to classical music and attend museums, that is who I am and departing from those experiences , I do my work.

Who are you?

I’m Matthias. I’m a photographer.

Where are you from?

Born in Berlin, raised in Berlin and still living in Berlin.

What do you do?

I do photography.

Your style in 3 words?

Quiet. Minimal. Focused.

What is your weakness?

Perfectionism.

What is your strength?

Perfectionism.

What makes you different?

Never asked myself. Maybe this is what makes me different?

When did you discover photography?

I have been taking pictures for as long as I can remember. But I really discovered photography during my studies at the renown Lette Verein in Berlin.

What do you want to express through your images?

In most of my work there is nothing concrete I want to express. It is more that I want to experiment with perception in general. I’m trying to create new experiences. I understand my artwork like an incentive for others to deal with certain issues. General themes are linked to some of my personal interests like environment, architecture, politics and media.

How do you choose your projects and how long to you work on them?

Ideas on what and how to visualize come from here and there. I mean life is my daily input. There is so much to discover these days. Life is getting faster and faster. I have the feeling that almost everything is about growth. Therefore I sometimes love to pause and sort my impressions, so I can think about how to deal with all these inputs. I take notes on things I visually want to discover. Mostly I do not have a clear vision from the beginning, it needs to develop. During my photography studies it was like a preset interval: I created a new project at least every six months. Now I’m trying to liberate myself from that strong rhythm. I take the time that it needs.

Tell us something more about (un)defined space?

This series is an investigation of urban space. An investigation of our living environment.

Contrary to the daily natural perception of urban space, my artworks of the (un)defined space series offer a directed and focused view on our surroundings. They invite the beholder to critically and consciously face their environment. It is not about a mere documentation of our environment but rather the chance to question things and to create new experiences.

Anything coming up soon?

Actually I’m working on three different projects. One of the projects is almost in a stage where it is ready to be shown. I am also thinking about creating a little print publication with some of my works. But this is a new territory for me.

Have you ever seen the movie The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus? Directed by Terry Gilliam and written by Gilliam and Charles McKeown, the film follows a traveling theater troupe whose leader takes audience members through a magical mirror to explore their imaginations and present them with a choice between self-fulfilling enlightenment or gratifying ignorance.

Well something similar actually exists. Travelling Colony is a major new work by Brook Andrew, represented by Tolarno Galleries, Melbourne, whose interdisciplinary arts practice travels internationally. For two decades this celebrated artist has been creating astonishing interventions into history through installation and interactive monuments, playfully seducing audiences into new ways of seeing compelling issues of race, consumerism and history.

Inspired by his Wiradjuri tradition, the circus and pop culture, this year he creates a cavalcade of dazzling hand-painted caravans in the huge industrial foyer of Carriageworks, Sidney Festival where one can enter each of the caravans in Travelling Colony and immerse himself in the stories of Redfern – its personalities, its struggles and its community.

For twenty days, from february 6th to 26th, Sur la Montagne in Berlin shows the installation Drama is in your Head by artist Edith Karlson:

“In Edith Karlson’s sculptural practice, animals and men are the main protagonists. Her often large-scale sculptural pieces produced by means of mixed techniques show a variety of characters, from colorful dogs to naked humans. However, these never stand alone as mere representations, but are composed into intricate installations. Like in the old mythologies, the creatures in Karlson’s works are tied into tangled interaction, as if telling their own modern day folklore and legends. The work on show at SlaM, Drama is in your head (2011), is the latest of Karlson’s productions, originally shown at the Stalker festival in Tallinn past summer. Compared to her previous works, the piece strikes as more stripped down and rough, exposed industrial materials creating a lab-like atmosphere. While the black dog located on the periphery of the installation resembles the large-scale animals in Karlson’s previous works, the centerpiece of the work represents human body in a completely different way. Here, man is dismantled: wooden planks support huge brains from which streams of blood are continuously flowing into various-sized industrial buckets. Reducing the subjective evaluation of human intellect and emotions to mere biology, Drama is in your head reminds us that objectivity is often perceived in purely rational scientific terms. It also warns of the fact that the flesh and blood that constitute humans—when separated from the unexplained and the unreasonable—amount to little more than a laboratory.”

This exhibition is called FABRICATORS. A fabricator is someone who makes things. He or she might be an engineer, a welder of a bridge-maker. James Capper, Alex Chinneck, Luke Hart and Sam Zealey are interested in how things are made, how they function and the properties of materials. The result for the viewer is the possibility of new ways to think about sculpture. Capper, Chinneck, Hart and Zealey are challenging our perceptions of sculpture, and pushing its boundaries.

The artists are thinking about ways to develop innovative sculpture using fabrication components, combined with their personal artistic practice. They are opening up their sculpture, and its audience, to a world that not only references art, and its traditional language, but also non art-related practices. James Capper sheds light on industry processes, Sam Zealey on science and engineering, Alex Chinneck on architecture and Luke Hart on cutting edge materials and science. All of the sculptures are technically highly complex and sophisticated, and accompanied by deep cerebral concerns.

The artists exhibiting in FABRICATORSare constantly problem-solving; creating sculpture that can suggest answers to spatial concerns, and, in doing so, pose new questions. These artists are investigating the relationships between humans and the physical structures and tools that we interact with on a daily basis. One aspect of this investigation is the exploration into the different possibilities of materials, including their molecular make-up, physical properties and applications.

By using cutting-edge technology, materials and processes these artists have transformed the fabrication of their sculpture to achieve the extraordinary from the ordinary. They have done so in surprising, and often witty, ways. The works are demonstrations of artistic developments and evolving experimentation into the form and function of sculpture. The ideas present in the works constantly lead each artist onto thinking about their next piece.

These artists are highly influenced by fields and disciplines outside of art, partaking in processes and methodologies that one would not consider as conventional art practice. The individual artists are curious and eager to learn about industry, machinery, engineering, architecture, pioneering technological advancement and science. And, in doing so, reveal work that is arguably influenced more by industry than the history of art. As an extension of this, we can see that the practice of these artists does not solely revolve around a physical studio but appears topically and intellectually integrated into the world outside of the studio.

Etienne Deroeux is an emerging French designer. Trained in Belgium at Antwerp’s Royal Academy and La Cambre in Brussels, he has collaborated with various fahion houses in Paris, London, and New York. Enhanced by these experiences, Etienne Deroeux presented his first collection ‘Saison Un’ in 2011 during Paris fashion week. His line evokes elegance, quality and remains timeless. All materials used are natural and handpicked carefully. The pieces are produced in France in limited copies, with each garment hand-numbered from 1 to 100, ensuring authenticity and exclusivity to each piece. Thanks to a subtle blend of tradition and modernity, his clothes offer the comfort of true, yet quiet luxury.
